RM255 Barry COCKCROFT Zodiac – 12 Pieces for solo clarinet, ‘Capricorn’

rm556_rock_meBarry’s Cockcroft’s piece Rock Me! is now available in our online store (look under the advanced tab). Written for American saxophonist Kenneth Tse in 2007, this advanced piece calls for great feats of saxophone dexterity! Rapid quasi-slap tonguing, distortion like an electric guitar, a drum solo performed entirely on the mouthpiece and occasionally even some standard saxophone notes. Complex for sure but a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

The 16th World Saxophone Congress will take place in St. Andrews, Scotland in 2012. Reed Music composer and saxophonist Barry Cockcroft has been elected to the International Saxophone Committee along with Claude Delangle (France), Kenneth Tse (USA), Andy Scott (UK), Shyen Lee (Thailand) and Thomas Liley (USA). Reed Music offers its congratulations to Richard Ingham (UK), director of the next congress and is looking forward to offering its support for this important event.

The university town of St Andrews is an exceptionally attractive location for an event of this sort. The university’s beautiful main concert hall seats nearly 1000 and there are convenient rehearsal facilities, a wide variety of performance venues of all sizes, and plentiful accommodation and restaurants all within easy walking distance in this charming and ancient coastal town. The congress proposal is supported by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, other UK conservatoires such as the Royal College of Music, The Royal Northern College of Music, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, leading soloists and composers, the National Saxophone Choir of Great Britain and the Clarinet and Saxophone Society of Great Britain. The World Saxophone Congress coincides with the University’s 600th anniversary celebrations and with the Olympic Games in London.

brendan_collinsViolin Suite
Violin and Piano
Brendan Collins, ed. Susan Collins
Published by Reed Music
Approx. Grade: 8+
Reviewer:  Jane Gillie

Reprinted with the kind permission of European String Teachers Association (British Branch)

This is real fun stuff, brash and brilliant and very jazzy.  It could be a refreshing adjunct to Vieuxtemps, Janacek, Beethoven and Brahms or perhaps apart of the repertoire of a light music player. There are three movements: Fiddler’s Be Bop, Bowing 747 and Groover’s Manoeuvre.  It is well written for violin, although most of Collins’ other work is for assorted brass and wind.  (The editor, Susan Collins is Head of Strings at Newcastle Conservatorium.)   Collins restricts his exploration of violin idiom to sweeping around the E and A strings with cross rhythm double stop accents punctuating what melody there is.    Occasional lyricism is confined to the top string.  The piano part is full of funky harmony.   It’s great to recognise the versatility of the violin again and for the zillionth time.
