Program Note:
This lovely, slightly jazzy lullaby in the French style is perfect for students seeking a pleasing slow piece for recital or private study. The melody derives from my unpublished song setting of the poem "Let Evening Come" by Jane Kenyon, reworked and adapted for oboe. The music resonantes with the tone of tender acceptance in Kenyon's poem, with a few spikes and harmonic twists reminiscent of Poulenc.

Performance note: Vodka Meets a Martini is written with a laid-back, lounge feel over a slightly more complex ‘classical’ structure which repeats a 26-bar cycle five times.
This piece is written for standard big band with the addition of flute. It is possible for the baritone saxophone to double flute and a composite part is available. In any event, it is important to have a professional flautist so in most cases a separate player is preferable.
The 1st trumpet line also includes a flugel horn part, to be played by a separate player. The part for the drum kit is mostly notated. Some embellishments are to be encouraged but it is important that the drummer learns the written part first, as the feel is very specific.
The additional percussion part is also essential and not to be thought of as optional.
