Russell GilmourRussell Gilmour (born Sydney, 1956) commenced tertiary studies in music at the relatively late age of 23 at the University of New England, Armidale, in 1979. Majoring in musicology and ethnomusicology, Gilmour also studied composition with Ann Ghandar and Graeme Koehne. After graduating, Gilmour spent twelve years teaching both primary and secondary school classroom music. He was Director of the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra from 1988 to 1990. In 1994 he moved to Tasmania and gave up full-time teaching to devote more time to composition.
A participant at the National Young Composers' School (1986), the National Orchestral Composers' School (1989) and several other composer workshops and forums, his music has been played by numerous ensembles, including: the Queensland, Tasmanian and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras, the Queensland Philharmonic, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Astra Chamber Players, Topology, Coruscations, the Australian Voices Youth Choir, the Tucana Quartet, the trombones of the National Academy of Music, Victorian Saxophone Quartet, Touchbass, Continuum Sax, Tasmanian Saxophone Quartet - and numerous soloists.
In 1998, he was awarded first prize in the RAAF Symphonic Wind Band Composition Competition for Millennium Crossing.
Gilmour lectured in Orchestration and Arranging at the Tasmanian Conservatorium from 1996 to 2001, was Artistic Administrator of the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra 1997 - 2004 and served on the State Governments' Arts Events Panel 1999 - 2000.
