Russell Gilmour

Russell Gilmour, born in 1956, received his early musical training at Guildford Grammar School in Western Australia and graduated from the University of New England. He has since worked as a teacher, lecturer and arts administrator. Gilmour is best known for short, quirky and humorous works such as Dark on Bach (2003), alongside more melancholic, brooding pieces like Seven Things I’ll Do Tomorrow (2005); his style developed intuitively after a brief flirtation with neo-Romanticism in the 1980s. With his wife Ingrid he founded the publishing imprint Opus House Press in the mid-1990s, launching the collaborative ‘musical portraits’ The Keating Tangos (1999) and the award-winning The Whitlam Rags (2002). He formed the Gilmour Ensemble in 2003. Gilmour currently teaches composition at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, accepts occasional commissions and maintains his farm.
