From organs to orchestras, ballads to ballet, Philip Norman’s work spans the breadth of the performing arts. Born in Christchurch in 1953, he studied at the University of Canterbury, gaining a BA, an MA (Hons) in musicology, and a PhD (1984), and has worked freelance as a composer, conductor, author, educator and publisher since 1978. His catalogue now numbers more than 250 works, ranging across orchestral, chamber, choral and opera (A Christmas Carol) to ballets such as Peter Pan and musicals with playwright Roger Hall, including Footrot Flats, still New Zealand’s best-selling musical. His biography Douglas Lilburn: His Life and Music won the 2007 Montana Book Awards biography category, and recent commissions include Echoes of an Exhibition (2017). In 2015 he was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to music and music theatre.
