Born in Sydney in 1970, Matthew Orlovich is a freelance composer who studied composition with Eric Gross and Peter Sculthorpe at the University of Sydney, earning the University Medal with his BMus (Hons) in 1993 and a PhD in 2000. His catalogue spans solo instruments, chamber ensembles, choirs, concert bands and orchestras, and has been performed across Europe, Britain, Canada, the USA, the Middle East, New Zealand and Australia by groups including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and the Harvard University Choir. His honours include the Jean Bogan Memorial Prize (1994), the ABC Orchestral Composers’ Award (1995) and the inaugural Willgoss Choral Composition Prize (2017). Recent saxophone works include “Cloud Nine” and “Seventh Heaven,” the latter featured on the 2024 CD “Traces.” His scores are published by Reed Music, Alfred Music, Morton Music and others.
