Katy Abbott

Katy Abbott is a highly awarded, published and recorded Australian composer whose accessible, engaging music leads listeners through narratives of sound, exploring home, place and human nature, often with a cheeky humour. Writing primarily for chamber, vocal and orchestral forces, she cleverly juxtaposes contemporary flavours with traditional settings. In 2024 she joined the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra as Composer-in-Residence, where her large-scale Hidden Thoughts: Stories of Awe was premiered at Hamer Hall. Her Hidden Thoughts series also includes Do I Matter?, winner of the 2019 Paul Lowin Song-Cycle Prize, and Return to Sender. Other works include Glacial Thunder for the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. A 2018 Australia Council Fellow, Abbott is an Honorary Senior Fellow at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne.
