Vodka Meets a Martini

Performance note: Vodka Meets a Martini is written with a laid-back, lounge feel over a slightly more complex ‘classical’ structure which repeats a 26-bar cycle five times.

This piece is written for standard big band with the addition of flute. It is possible for the baritone saxophone to double flute and a composite part is available. In any event, it is important to have a professional flautist so in most cases a separate player is preferable.

The 1st trumpet line also includes a flugel horn part, to be played by a separate player. The part for the drum kit is mostly notated. Some embellishments are to be encouraged but it is important that the drummer learns the written part first, as the feel is very specific.

The additional percussion part is also essential and not to be thought of as optional.

Night Drive is almost entirely constructed out of a 24–quaver pattern that results from the interlocking of a 4–note motive against a 3–note motive.

This technique builds upon a very similar idea found in the music of Steve Reich and in particular his 1967 work Piano Phase, which interlocks a 3–note motive against a 2–note motive.

In Night Drive, the majority of new rhythmic and melodic shapes are created by substituting rests for beats, resulting in new patterns and shifting rhythmic emphasis. The original pattern was formulated at the piano and the subsequent variations were all shaped with the sound and technique of a solo alto saxophone in mind.

To me, this is travelling music – fast in tempo, steadily driving through the night.

The work was written for my long–time friend and musical collaborator, Barry Cockcroft.

The title of this piece refers to the height at which spacecraft orbit the Earth, and by extension what the planet looks like from up there. Pictures of Earth taken from space certainly conjure feelings of majestic elation to my mind and I have attempted to capture that feeling in this piece of music. 300 Kilometres Above was written as a companion piece to 90 Minutes Circling the Earth, which I wrote around 10 years earlier. I think the two pieces have something on common despite being written a decade apart. This newer meditation was commissioned by Reed Music with assistance from the Music Board of the Australia Council for the Arts.

Contents: I. In Orbit, II. Departure Lounge, III. In Traffic

Program Note

I. In Orbit
This was written wondering what it would be like to see the Earth from space. It also serves as a hymn to the technology of satellites that increasingly connect our humble human communications.

II. Departure Lounge
Most commonly, this is at an airport. When travelling alone, this can be a place to contemplate the state of one’s existence while trying to find the right angle to perch one’s hand luggage as a foot stool. But this can also be at a train station – and Sydney Central boasts a (very) modest lounge for travellers waiting for the night train to Melbourne.

III. In Traffic
Statistics bear out that lane swapping in heavy traffic to maximise time and position is mostly a waste of time and dangerous into the bargain. What’s worse is nipping into the fast lane on a slight opening, only for it to become the slow lane. My advice? Take the bike or public transport.

These pieces have been published with key signatures for ease of reading, though were not conceived as conventionally ‘tonal’ pieces.
