William Lovelock (1899–1986) was an English-born composer, examiner and writer whose long career bridged London and Australia. Educated at Trinity College of Music, London, where he took his B.Mus. (1922) and D.Mus. (1932), he joined its teaching staff and served as an examiner there for decades. He was also examiner in music for the University of London and Dean of its Faculty of Music (1954–1956). In 1956 he became founding director of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane, leaving the post in 1959 but remaining in Australia. He was chief music critic of Brisbane’s Courier-Mail (1959–1981) and a busy eisteddfod adjudicator and examiner. Author of nearly thirty influential textbooks, including The Rudiments of Music, he also composed widely, his Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra (1970) among his best-known works. He returned to England after his wife’s death in 1981 and died at Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire.
