Margery Smith

Margery Smith is an Australian performer, composer and improviser based in Sydney and Melbourne. She studied clarinet and saxophone at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and further afield in Europe and the USA, and later studied composition with Malcolm Singer at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and with Richard Vella in Australia, completing a PhD on improvisation as a catalyst for collaborative musical thinking. Her orchestral roles have included Associate Principal Clarinet with the Sydney Symphony and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. A member of Continuum Sax, she has been commissioned by Orchestra Victoria, Hourglass Ensemble, the Omega Ensemble and others, with recent works including Breath for solo trombone (2025, ANAM) and Everything I Touch (2019). Themes of social justice and ecology run through her music, and she teaches and mentors widely.
