Gregory van der Struik has been Principal Trombone and Section Leader of the Opera Australia Orchestra (formerly the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra) since 1987, having first performed with the company in 1984. He studied with Geoffrey Bailey and Arthur Hubbard at the Sydney Conservatorium High School, graduating as an Associate of the State Conservatorium of Music. A versatile musician who also plays piano, piano accordion and bass trumpet, he founded the Trombonis Australis Project in 1990 to develop and record an Australian contribution to international brass repertoire, performing across Australia, Europe and Asia. International trombonist and composer John Kenny has described him as “one of the most interesting trombonists pushing for increased recognition of the trombone anywhere.” Active as a composer, teacher and adjudicator, van der Struik judged the 2MBS Young Virtuoso Award in 2024 and 2025.
